Where do you live?
Prop 8 was a law passed in California that denies same sex marriages. The LDS church funded a lot of money towards campaigning for it to pass and was even preaching about it from the pulpit. (which means that the church should lose it's tax exempt status)
many Mormons even moved to California temporarily to help sway the vote.
All to prevent people from being able to marry simply because of their sexual orientation.

...in essence, after many unfortunate events, that was what killed off the final traces of belief in me for Mormonism.

Yeah, it's what started me on my way out permanently. I was so shocked and appalled by their involvement. My first thought was, "They lied! They said they'd never get involved in politics, and here they're doing just that!" Then I thought, "But what about agency? They're always preaching about how sacred agency is, and here they are actively fighting against others civil rights. People who are just minding their own business, trying to live their own lives." I was just so disgusted. What about Article of Faith # 11 ?

That very issue is what got me searching the internet and a link landed me on the Mormon Curtain, and the rest is history. I refused to have my name associated with such a bigoted and deceitful organization. That issue tipped me over the top, from mere inactivity to downright resignation.

Even how they did it was sneaky. They had the members donate so that they could say they didn't donate that much at all. "Oh, the members are doing this on their own. They have a right as citizens to campaign as they please." Then they lied about how much they'd spent, later admitting that okay, it was more than they'd initially said. It was ugly. Just plain ugly.

Don't worry. I'm pretty apolitical. I didn't know what it was till I had read about a dozen posts on it!

There are many reasons why I wanted to have my name removed, but prop 8 is what finally pushed me to take action and actually write my letter of resignation. I just cannot be associated with that kind of thing. Just knowing my name was attached to that made me sick. I live in California and everytime I heard about it (which was all the time) it made me literally feel sick.

Wow, what a great question. Proposition 8 was an effort to redistinguish the popular vote of the people, over a judges ruling, on what the definition of California state marriage might include. Not however, the different religious marriages.
