I sent in my resignation letter by email on Sunday to the infamous Dodge and received a (surprisingly swift) reply today telling me I had to talk to the bishop and an "Are You Sure?" pamphlet. Luckily, the bishop holds interviews on Tuesdays (today), so I walked in with a hand written letter, slipped it into one of the complimentary tithing envelopes found out side the door and waited. After about 15 minutes he was available... I walked into his office, slid my letter across the desk and said, "here's the resignation letter you need".

My letter was very concise and made it apparent I would not be dissuaded. After reading it said, "If this is your decision, and you're sure, I have to stand by it."

After a bit of light conversation about my future plans for education I left, liberated.

Now I just have to wait for my confirmation letter... And the fallout from my family of course. :)

That sounds like it went very well, and felt even better from the way you described it too.

But if anybody needs to resign and not talk to a brainwashed older priesthood holder. The whole and entire experience can be thankfully and easily skipped, totally skipped and deleated from their future.

As instanty as the stamp is placed onto the envelope. As soon as the metal post office lit shuts and twangs away the bell of freedom. The very moment the resignation letter is slipped inside of it's own envelope and on it's way to LDS Inc.

Or, as in this case, with the smallest and barely discernable, click.

Glad you found your way onto greener pastures weeedoodle, we're all here if you need us.

That cracked me up. You say you don't want to be Mormon any more and you get a letter back telling you what to do.
So you "do it" and in the middle of "doing it" there's a "pamphlet" which I'm sure had more things in it telling you what to do.
The Mormon church reminds me of a nagging needy spouse/significant other.
So if there's a printed pamphlet then I'm thinking there are so many people leaving Mormonism that they had to print pamphlets. I think that's absolutely hysterical.

What a shame. I hope the fallout from your family is a lot less than what you're anticipating.
Good luck! :-)

The pamphlet is a beautiful generic full color tri folded thing, very professionally done. ... or at least it was a year ago when I left.

weeedoodle, congrats for sending in your letter. As mentioned, you're out now, enjoy the freedom. They just have to take care of business on their end before they are free of you... but you are already free of them.

Peace

It is interesting after all these years to hear these stories. I got out over 20 years ago, and went through similar trauma. But the fact is you own your own life- such is the hold the church has on people they try to make you feel like an errant little boy in the Principal's office. Now, after all this time, General Authorities, Stake Presidents and so on are merely pathetic to me. Even now it is difficult for me to explain to nonmembers what it was like as a member. The church is very successful at presenting a far different image than the reality it is.
