Cleaning out my document files today and ran into this fun little read!

" The book seems to be merely a PROSY detail of imaginary history, with the
Old Testament for a model; followed by a tedious plagiarism of the New
Testament. The author labored to give his words and phrases the quaint,
old-fashioned sound and structure of our King James translation of the
Scriptures; and the result is a mongrel-half modern glibness, and half
ancient simplicity and gravity. The latter is awkward and constrained; the
former natural, but grotesque by the contrast. Whenever he found his
speech growing too modern - which was about every sentence or two - he
ladled in a few such Scriptural phrases as "exceeding sore," and "it came to
pass," etc., and made things satisfactory again. "And it came to pass" was
his pet. If he had left that out, his Bible would have been only a
pamphlet. "

Twain wasn't too kind to the BoM. There's a bunch more in his review of the book.

Peace

Thanks for this link, productofchoice.

This cracked me up because it's so true:
"The book is a curiosity to me, it is such a pretentious affair . . . "

That's Mormons in a nutshell - pretentious.

Twain pointed out that there are no cities in the BoM on any map ever printed, right? Did I understand that correctly? Where did they go? I'm just amazed that the church keeps holding on to that 'rod'....I mean, b.s. Excuse me if I'm naive about this but it's just making me really angry. My still-believing family cannot talk about any of these inconsistencies with me.....sigh!

This is where I found the maps. You may need to scroll down a bit to find them, but directly below them is a chart that shows other place names form Joseph Smith's time that were converted into BOM place names.

I don't know why but the Ripple Lake - Waters of Ripliancum one really pissed me off.

Oh my gosh I'd never noticed that before! Maybe that book gave Mark Twain the inspiration for his chloroform quote. :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:
